Theme of the Lesson/Unit: Geometry and Art
Grade Level: 3rd grade
Lesson Overview:
Integrating and reviewing mathematical terms via performance based activity (artwork)
Essential Question:
Why do we have geometric shapes in our world?
GP Standards:
M3G1. Students will further develop their understanding of geometric figures by drawing them.
National Visual Arts Standards:
CONNECTING
IV. Artistic Process: Connecting- Relating artistic ideas and work with personal meaning and external context.
Anchor Standard #11. Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding.
Objectives (based on Bloom’s taxonomy):
The Student Will:
1.Create artwork that contains geometric shapes
2.Identify primary colors, vertical/horizontal lines, angles and geometric shapes.
3.Define the art style:Formalism
4.Identify Mondrian’s De Stijl art style
Vocabulary:
Geometric Shapes:
Square: A four-sided polygon having equal-length sides meeting at right angles. The sum of the angles of a square is 360 degrees.
Rectangle: A four-sided polygon having all right angles. The sum of the angles of a rectangle is 360 degrees
Lines: a continuous extent of length, straight or curved, without breadth or thickness; the trace of a moving point. vertical-line moving up and down; horizontal –line moving back and forth
Angles. space between diverging lines
Piet Mondrian: Dutch artist in 1800-1900’s, part of De Stijl art movement which expresses the idea of harmony and order simplifying all parts
Formalism: Formalism emphasizes compositional elements such as color, line, shape and texture rather than realism, context, and content.
Symmetrical/Asymmetrical: Position of parts on opposite sides of a dividing line or median plane or about a
center or axis/Having no balance or symmetry
Materials:
8x8” white paper, strips of black construction paper, glue, crayons
Introduction:
A . Power Point presentation introducing Mondrian’s art style and involving students with Q and A.
a. Students will view a PowerPoint on Mondrian which will incorporate mathematical words and
definitions.
b. Students will view a demonstration on the steps to make a Mondrian type artwork
c. Students will be compare/contrast symmetrical and asymmetrical designs using black lines.
Once a design is selected, the lines are glued and 3 shapes are colored using each primary color
d. Students will fill in assessment worksheet
Assessment:
Completed artwork w/ primary colors, straight vertical and horizontal lines
Worksheet:
Student’s Name ______________________________________
Answer Questions and circle your answer.
1.Draw a horizontal line:
2.Draw a vertical line:
3.Draw an angle:
4.A symmetrical design looks balanced on both sides? Yes No
5. Write the names of the primary colors.
____________ ___________________ ___________________
6.Draw 2 geometric shapes:
7.The art style formalism is: A. artwork that looks real OR B. artwork that uses only elements
and principles of art
8.Which artwork is an example of Mondrian’s art. (Circle Art)
