Visual Art Standards Made Easy for the Early Grades

On your art room walls, you’re required to post the Visual Art Standards related to your lessons.

As an elementary art teacher, I wanted my students in kindergarten, first and second grades to

grasp why we have art activities.

So, I translated the Visual Art Standards to “kid language” and made a poster with magnetic

movable arrows.

For each class, I would place arrows next to the activities that would be covered in that

particular art lesson. These activities would be presented at the beginning of the class and

students would echo the information.

This teaching strategy enriched student language and confidence especially, when explaining to

a principal when asked, “What are you learning/doing today in art class”.

The Essential Question is also replaceable using a magnetic clip.

Review the art standards your county uses and adapt this idea for your classroom.
